The purpose of this study is to evaluate the trend in incidence of gunshot injury and death observed at UF Health Jacksonville over the past 22 years. The researchers plan to create a hot spot mapping model to indicate location of high incidence of firearm violence and compare this to geographical mapping of reported crimes, race, and socioeconomic status. A retrospective review of medical records for adult patients age 18-99 years, who were admitted to UF Health Jacksonville between January 1, 1996 and January 1, 2018 for treatment of a gun-shot injury will be performed to obtain study data. Demographic variables include: age, race, gender, circumstances of gunshot (suicide, homicide, unintentional), location of gunshot (home or public), if shooter is known to victim, and if the patient previously suffered a gunshot wound. Medical variables include: injury severity score, surgical interventions, admission to ICU, and outcome(s). Socioeconomic variables include: zip code, home environment. Geographic reported crime rates will be obtained utilizing the area deprivation index (ADI) for Duval County.
