The fellow is exposed to a broad range of surgical experiences. Clinical experience is structured for the acquisition of clinical acumen through graduated responsibility in pre-, intra- and postoperative patient care. The fellow will gain significant experience in laryngologic surgery. The fellow also will develop expertise in the evaluation and care of care of the voice and swallowing disorders.

The clinical experience will take place at:

• UF Health Jacksonville - a 695-bed teaching hospital with 15 main operating rooms, including four state-of-the-art videoscopic designated rooms with endoscopic integration.
• UF Health North - a 92-bed hospital, 24/7 adult and pediatric emergency center and an outpatient multispecialty medical office building.

Call Responsibilities

The fellow will be assigned call from home. Managing ENT urgent and emergent patients as well as issues arising in long-standing patients during evenings and weekends. Support services and systems are in place to assure that fellows do not spend an inordinate amount of time in non-educational activities that can be conducted properly by other personnel. Work hours will be limited according to the institutional guidelines.

Clinic Responsibilities

The fellow will participate in the initial evaluation of patients, follow-up evaluation of clinical work up, preoperative assessment and planning, as well as patient postoperative care.

Goals and Objectives

The overall goal of the fellowship is to develop laryngologic surgeons interested in academic practice and/or caring for patients with difficult rhinologic conditions. The program will teach advanced operative skills, patient management and will further develop clinical research and teaching skills.

By the completion of the program the fellow should:

• Develop and enhance operative technique and clinical skills in the pre- and post-operative management in advanced laryngologic surgery with a major emphasis on minimally invasive techniques and emerging technology
• Develop and implement research projects related to the content areas of the fellowship, including manuscript preparation and oral presentation preparation expectations
• The fellowship is overseen and administratively supported by the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville Office of Educational Affairs

Research

Active participation in research is required. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects while encouraged to initiate their own scholarly ideas. In-depth guidance and counseling are provided by faculty well-versed in the area of research. Training spans the spectrum from constructing study protocols, to enrolling patients, to gathering and analyzing data, to writing abstracts and manuscripts.

The University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville encourages resident/fellow research through the availability of Dean’s Fund Research Travel Awards and an annual Celebration of Resident and Fellow Education and Research, with residents and fellows from all disciplines presenting their work. Well-designed studies conducted in collaboration with the faculty have resulted in residents and fellows presenting their research at regional, national and international meetings.
